Rolling joints is an art. Like any art, it takes practice, education, and a hint of talent to truly master.

Many stoners go their entire smoking careers relying on glass and the goodwill of others, never learning how to master the art of the roll. If we were talking blunts, I could understand – but joints are the backbone of the stoner lifestyle.

I don’t want to ignore the challenges of learning how to roll. It is tricky to learn and oftentimes frustrating, involving crumpled papers, spilled bud and a few swear words.

But what if you used a rolling paper that made it easier to roll a joint?

That’s the idea behind Curved Papers.

Why I Like Curved Papers Rice Rolling Papers

Curved Papers is both a brand and a product, making a rice rolling paper sans corners.
What, exactly, does that mean?

Let’s go back to Algebra. Most rolling papers are rectangles, longer than they are wide with 90-degree angles in the corners. These papers have been made in some form or another since the early 1600s and are easily recognizable. They can also be tricky to maneuver – who hasn’t rolled a joint well at the bottom only to find that the top corner is loose?

With traditional rolling papers, you have two options: keep the top and bottom edges parallel for an even roll, or roll the bottom corner first and create a cone shape. Both have their merits in smoking, but are challenging to master.

Curved papers are not rectangles – one side is rounded with sloped edges for an easier roll. The top and both ends of the paper look the same, but the bottom side, where you’ll start rolling the paper in, is curved. Thus, no sharp corners to tuck.

You can roll these the traditional way, starting with the bottom edge and working your way up to the top, or roll from the middle. Curved Papers suggests the second method.

These rolling papers are made from rice. Rice is a slightly less common base than hemp or wood pulp but still creates a thin, silky smooth paper. Note that rice papers tend to be thinner than other types of rolling papers, which makes them less forgiving during the joint roll. Rice paper also tends to burn slower than hemp or wood pulp.

Why I Give Curved Papers Rice Rolling Papers 4 Stars

There are a few things I didn’t love, which I knocked a star off for.

The first was the packaging of these papers. Most rolling papers come bent at the seam already, making it easy for you to add in your weed and roll up. These papers come flat and smooth in the package, which is held together by a cardboard band. You have to slide the band on and off to get papers out and it’s easy to spill the loose papers everywhere (speaking from experience)

The other thing I didn’t love was that because these papers aren’t bent, it’s harder to tell which side the gum line is on. I rolled up one joint excitedly only to find out that I had the paper backward and the gum line was on the outside.

I like these papers overall. I’ve only been rolling my own joints for a few years and found it easy enough to roll up with Curved Papers. My partner, who’s been rolling joints for the last decade, found it slightly more challenging – but he’s a pro at the rectangle papers.
