Hello Again Period Suppositories Product Review

Product Name: Hello Again Period Suppositories

Brand: Hello Again

Category: Suppository

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summary: An ancient medical delivery system meets modern extraction technology for fast relief from period pain

I first tried Hello Again’s suppositories back in 2022 when I interviewed co-founder Carrie Mapes. She kindly sent me a box to try, and surprisingly, I really liked them. But then, I was just getting comfortable talking about cannabis publicly – I wasn’t about to review a weed suppository.

Three years later, I’m over that hesitation, and Hello Again has evolved. I got my hands on their revamped formula last December in Las Vegas when the company sponsored a Canna Babes lounge. Since I last knew the brand, it has come under new leadership.

About Hello Again Period Suppositories

Originally, Hello Again was founded to help menopausal women. While menopause is something that every woman will experience, it is little understood in our modern medical system, and women are left with few options for dealing with the myriad of changes and challenges that arise (Lauren Mundell discusses this eloquently.)

Cannabis has the potential to help with that.

Suppositories for Period Pain

Well, the cat’s out of the bag – not only do I get a period, I use these suppositories to deal with my cycle. And I like them.

More specifically, I used them to deal with the pre-bleeding cramps I get in the 2 – 8 days before my cycle begins again.

Suppositories can be a controversial delivery method, but to me, it just makes sense. Vaginal walls, like all of your organs, contain endocannabinoid receptors. Suppositories deliver cannabinoids directly to the source of the pain and absorb rapidly.

These work pretty quickly – I felt initial relief from my cramping around 15 minutes after insertion, and sometimes even faster than that. Keeping my pelvis angled well was my main concern, and for the most part, I did well at that.

Suppositories are small and shaped like little bullets. They’re an odd green/grey color that I don’t pay much attention to and smell strongly of cocoa butter – very strongly of cocoa butter. They’re a smooth texture, and it’s very important to make sure they’re kept cool enough to hold their shape. I can’t stress this enough – warm suppositories melt and become un-insertable.

What are Hello Again Period Suppositories Made Of?

One of the things I love about Hello Again is its short ingredient list. The carrier is made from cocoa butter and avocado oil, and the other herbal ingredients are all things you may see from a local herbalist, or in a tea blended with the same remedy in mind.

Each formulation has a specific blend of CBD and THC, as well as other herbal ingredients, tailored for specific needs. The period ones have a 1:2 ratio of THC to CBD, 10 mg of THC and 20 mg of CBD per pill. It also has sweet thyme, lemon balm, ylang ylang, and pine needle extraction. These are well-known sources of certain terpenes like pinene and geraniol that are known to help reduce inflammation and lower pain levels. The sleep formulation has hops extract, lavender, and nerolidol, all sources of sedating terpenes, myrcene and nerolidol, as well as relaxing linalool – you get the gist.

Do Hello Again Suppositories Get You High?

No, you likely won’t feel high from using Hello Again period suppositories. That’s not to say THC suppositories can’t get you high – they can, because the THC is absorbed into your bloodstream. Suppositories are transmucosal, being absorbed through the mucous membranes in your body. But the dosage in these (between 2 and 20mg) of THC absorbed through the vagina is not enough for most people to feel the intoxicating high effect.

However, if you are particularly sensitive to the effects of THC, you may notice slightly intoxicating effects on the formulas with more THC, like the hangover pill with 20 mg. The everyday suppository with 2 mg of THC likely won’t get anyone high.

How to Use Hello Again Period Suppository

Using a suppository is simple.

  • Take it out of the packaging (these ones from Hello Again peel apart from the top of the bullet-shaped package.)
  • Gently insert the suppository through the vaginal opening. Push it as far back into the vaginal canal as you are able to. Ideally, the suppository is resting on or near your cervix or the vaginal walls.
  • Withdraw and wash your hands.
  • Lay down. It’s best to remain on your back for 20 – 30 minutes after inserting the suppository to give it time to dissolve and absorb into your body.

Some of the feedback I’ve heard from women on why they don’t like suppositories is because they can (for lack of a better term) drip out. And this is true. If you insert a suppository in the morning and then go on with your day, you may feel it exit the way it entered.

There are two ways to deal with this. Firstly, you can wear a panty liner to catch it. But what I really recommend is timing your suppositories for when you’re able to lie down for a bit. This is obviously challenging for women with small children, so perhaps play “don’t wake the sleeping parent” and elevate your pelvis. Not only does it help keep the medicine in the right place, but it’s a moment (or several moments of pause) to be with yourself in stillness.

Women’s hormonal levels fluctuate throughout the month, and contrary to popular belief, we’re not meant to push ourselves at the same 100% as the rest of the month during our period (or PMS week, if you’re like me.) We’re meant to take it easier. Slower. Allow our bodies to do the internal work and give our external bodies some grace and softness. Suppositories remind us of that and encourage us to carve out time for that, so it’s no wonder that if you have to be on the go, you may not appreciate the time that suppositories ask you to spend on yourself.

How to Store Suppositories?

If you live in a cooler climate, you can store your suppositories in a temperature-stable place, like a bathroom cabinet. If you live somewhere particularly warm or humid, it’s best to store your suppositories in the fridge. When a suppository gets too warm, it loses its shape, which makes it challenging to remove and insert. For reference, I stored these in my bathroom when I lived in Upstate New York.

Historical Use of Suppositories

Suppositories are small, bullet-shaped drug delivery vehicles that combine medicine with a dissolvable carrier oil and are inserted into the vagina or anus.

Suppositories are a truly ancient form of medical delivery and one that I firmly believe deserves a place of higher regard in a woman’s life. References of suppositories date back millennia, mentioned in Hebrew, Egyptian papyrus, and even by Hippocrates.

The Endocannabinoid System & Periods

The endocannabinoid system, your master regulatory network that exists in all mammals, oversees your endocrine system, AKA your hormones. When the ECS is off, your other systems are off – and this can include your cycle. Cannabis has the potential to help with a myriad of women-specific issues, particularly those around the cervix and estrogen.

Recent research includes:

  • A 2019 review of research concluded that “the ECS is intimately involved in the central and local control of female reproductive events” including influences uterine contracts, endometrial function, and hormone production.
  • A 2013 review of research noted:
    • “Plasma [anandamide] concentration increases in the natural menstrual cycle at the time of ovulation have stimulated researchers on this peculiar topic (Nir et al. 1973). Recently, it has been reported that the entire endocannabinoid system is active at the ovarian level…”
    • “There are several possibilities that specific, still undefined dysfunctions of the endocannabinoid system may be implicated in some pathological condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affects the ovary…”
    • “In the uterus, the endometrium represents a significant source of endogenous cannabinoids, and AEA levels are higher than in other reproductive tissues.”
    • “Endocannabinoids exert important actions in female reproductive organs. Their biological activities include regulation of oocyte and follicle maturation, embryo transport through the oviduct and implantation of the blastocyst. Impairment of the endocannabinoid system has been associated with pathological conditions involving these organs. In addition, it has recently emerged that endocannabinoids also regulate endometrial plasticity modulating endometrial cell migration and proliferation.”

Most interestingly, a 2024 survey-based study found that women who used high-CBD suppositories (100 mg) “demonstrated significantly reduced frequency and severity of menstrual-related symptoms, impact of symptoms on daily functioning, need for analgesics, and number of analgesics” and “reported at least moderate improvement of symptoms.” The study also noted that “historically, cannabis has been used to alleviate gynecologic conditions and symptoms, including menstrual-related pain and discomfort”
