About Tap Root Fields CBD Sunscreen

How much is there to say about sunscreen? You put it on and it either does the job or it doesn’t.

But what’s going into your sunscreen and thus on your skin and in nature? I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t read my sunscreen labels, nor do I understand much about the chemicals commonly used. But what I do know is that while sunscreen is necessary (SO necessary) it can also have a harmful impact on the environment, especially in the water.

I first learned about the devastating impact sunscreen can have on coral reefs and other aquatic life several years ago. Since then, I’ve tried to only buy reef-safe sunscreen, with the assumption that if it’s good for saltwater life, it’s probably better for freshwater too. But more than one reef-safe sunscreen has been thick and hard to spread, creating a visibly white, tacky barrier between me and the world that leaves me feeling slimy, if protected.

That’s not the case for this reef-safe sunscreen by Tap Root Fields. Yes, it does the job of protecting your skin, but that’s not the only reason I love it.

Their sunscreen is SPF 30 with 500 mg of CBD in every bottle, with a consistency that glides over skin and absorbs right in – no white cast left. It comes in a pump bottle so you can be precise with your application, without wasting any. I also like that it doesn’t have an overly chemical smell.

Tap Root Fields sunscreen also has a short list of ingredients. I won’t pretend to understand them (I’m not a scientist) but I always like to see a shorter list of chemicals rather than a longer one. Of course, it also has 500 mg of CBD.

Skin benefits of CBD

Why bother adding CBD to sunscreen? While it may not protect you against UVA and UVB rays like the other ingredients, it still has skin-nourishing benefits that are important to consider.

You have endocannabinoid receptors all over your body, including on your skin. Topical products like CBD sunscreen activate these receptors without getting you high (topical products don’t cross through the skin barrier to get you high; only transdermal products do.) This activation is called cannabinoid signaling, and it’s important for skin health. Proper cannabinoid signaling can maintain your skin barrier, improve scarring from acne, and promote healing from abrasions (and potentially sunburns!)

Other skincare benefits of CBD include:

  • CBD is thought to promote skin healing as well as helping skin disorders like itchy skin and acne. If you’re prone to breakouts or have sensitive skin, seeking out CBD-infused products may help.
  • The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can soothe irritated skin and actually reduce oil products (hence helping with acne.) It also has antimicrobial properties, which reduce the growth of bacteria in skincare products.

All in all, CBD can be a very beneficial ingredient in many skincare products, especially sunscreen which can cause irritation and breakouts.

My experience with Tap Root Fields Sunscreen

I’ll be the first to admit it- I’m about as white as they come. My ancestry is almost entirely Northern European, with a heavy amount of Irish. In the winter, my inner arms become translucent, and the blueness of my veins shines through. I’ve had sunburns and full-blown sun poisoning before. Clearly, sunscreen is important for me.

I took this sunscreen with me to Mexico on my honeymoon and it worked wonderfully. I didn’t burn at all, which I credit to thorough reapplication as much as the sunscreen itself. Since it’s reef-safe, I could use it throughout the trip, whether I was sunbathing, taking a dip in a saltwater pool, or diving in for snorkeling. I was glad not to have to worry about half of my sunscreen blowing in the wind (thanks aerosolizers) or walking around looking like I was auditing for the female version of Casper the Friendly Ghost.

I like this sunscreen so much, it made the cut to come in the van with me.

Who is Tap Root Fields?

Tap Root Fields is a small regenerative produce and cannabis farm based in Skaneateles NY. They believe that people deserve to know where their food and weed are coming from and what went into it – a revolutionary idea in an industry (and country) built on mass farming practices. I got a chance to visit their farm in 2022, the first year they planted THC plants.

I was surprised to find a reef-safe sunscreen made by a company in landlocked Upstate NY. But it just goes to show how seriously Tap Root Fields takes its commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
