Well, that depends on who you ask.
Most of the OG stoners will say no – don’t complicate it and don’t make it fancy. Roll the joint, use a cardboard filter if you must, smoke it, and repeat.

Do I Need a Reusable Filter Tip?
To the seasoned stoner who’s been lighting up for decades, a reusable filter tip can seem frivolous, just one more accessory to spend your precious weed money on. And sure, you can certainly make a case for that when you can easily roll a cardboard or hemp filter tip.
But there’s another case to be made too. A case for not having stinky fingers or harsh pulls. A case for added filtration that takes nothing away from your smoking experience, and indeed adds something that was missing.
I would be lying if I said I used these Weedgets reusable filter tips every time I smoked. But every time I use them, I’m reminded of how much I like them.
They’re small, lightweight, easily fit onto the ends of my joints, and give me an added layer of filtration that removes much of the tar and other nastiness of combustion from my hits. These filter tips make my joints hit more smoothly and they keep me from getting joint hands – that leftover smell of weed and smoke that can cling to fingers.
To be clear, I always roll my joints (and even my blunts) with a filter tip. This is usually made from cardboard or hemp. I have rolling packs that include filter tip papers, but I’ve also used the cardboard from joint packs in a pinch. I use these silicone filter tips on top of my usual joint tip.

The tips themselves are made of medical-grade silicone and a washable filter screen. These screens need to be washed regularly with use because of the tar and resin build-up.
Once you can’t draw air through the tip, it’s time for a wash. Just drop the tip into a bag of isopropyl alcohol (or your favorite cleaner) and let sit for a few hours. Use a Q-tip to remove the gunk and wash with warm water.
These filter tips come in four sizes: small, medium, large, and extra-large. I have the small version and it fits most of my joints, prerolls, and blunts well. You can also use these tips on a vape pen and dry herb bowls for cleaner hits however you want to smoke. (The Maze-X pipe from Weedgets comes with an additional filter tip.) The large and extra-large tips can fit over the end of most dry herb pipes.
