How many jars of CBD balm is too many?

I don’t know and I haven’t hit the limit yet.

While topical cannabis products are often relegated as “weed for old people”, I am a champion of this oft-overlooked way to use the plant. I’ve been trying out topicals since 2021, and have yet to find one that I truly did not like.

I reach for topicals all the time: I used CBD topicals almost exclusively to heal a sprained ankle. I apply them when I sleep funny in the van or take a long hike or spot an area of skin that needs a little extra love. All of that to say, I know a good topical.

Good topicals are the sum of their parts: the ingredients, the aroma, the texture, and the dose. The ingredients list should be short (and ideally pronounceable), the aroma pleasing, the texture easy to spread and quick to absorb, and the dose high enough to be effective.

This Eucalptyus balm from CBD skincare brand HIGHNMIGHTY ticks all of these boxes.

About HIGHNMIGHTY Eucalyptus CBD Balm

First, the ingredients list. HIGHNMIGHTY creates small batches of handcrafted CBD products and I love that they have such a short list of ingredients. This balm has 7: hemp, coconut oil, beeswax, essential oils, eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, and lavender. None of these are highly manufactured nor do I find them irritating to my skin.

The CBD is pulling a lot of weight in the ingredients, but nothing here is superfluous. The coconut and beeswax create a smooth texture and leave your skin hydrated, while eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, and lavender are an herbal blend designed to help you leave aches and pain behind and feel good.

The next thing is the scent: it’s earthy and light with a hint of zing at the end. The eucalyptus hits you first, but the tea tree and peppermint come through at the end. It’s a strong scent and while the balm itself doesn’t smell as strongly when you apply it, the aroma is noticeable as it absorbs. I love this scent and don’t think that’s a bad thing, but it is something to be aware of.

This balm has a thinner texture than others I’ve used in the past and has gotten a little oily as it’s heated up. In a properly insulated house stored away, this likely wouldn’t be a big issue, but the van turns into a convection oven in the heat. Regardless, it scoops smoothly and applies easily. It takes a few minutes to absorb, like most balms, and leaves your skin silky soft.

The dose is the only unknown here. The website and the packaging say “full spectrum cannabis sativa hemp” but don’t include a dose of any kind. I can’t speculate how strong it is, but I’ve found this balm to be effective for small aches and pains and larger kinds of soreness like DOMs.

CBD for Skincare?

CBD, a wonderful multi-receptor compound, brings a few strengths to your skincare routine (and this balm, specifically.)

First is the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. These are extensively researched benefits of CBD and one of the main reasons I keep so many CBD products on hand. With CBD, I don’t have to reach for ibuprofen every time my shoulders ache or my neck feels funny. Your endocannabinoid system has receptors on every organ in your body, of which your skin is the largest. When you apply CBD topically, it interacts with these receptors to provide localized relief.

CBD also has some skin-specific benefits. The ECS plays a significant role in skin homeostasis, as it does in all systems. Early research on CBD suggests that this compound may help manage oxidative stress responses in skin cells. Oxidative stress is the root cause of many issues from early aging all the way up to Alzheimer’s and cancer.
