Product Name: Jack Herer
Brand: F & J Farm
Category: Smokable
Star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Summary: An iconic, but hard-to-find, uplifting cannabis strain

I was stoked to come across Jack Herer flower in Oregon.
I have heard amazing things about this strain, long heralded as one of the best uplifting sativas on the market, with a rare terpinolene terpene dominance and strong promises of unshakeable focus and otherwordly productivity.
Of course, the more something is talked up, the less realistic our expectations become. And, given the inherent differences in each of our endocannabinoid systems (as unique as your fingerprint!) promised strain effects are never guaranteed. What I found with this specific strain of Jack Herer was aromatic and uplifting, yet too stimulating for an all-day smoke.
About F & J’s Farm in Oregon
F & J’s is a small farm in Linn County Oregon, south of Portland and west of the coast that believes all cannabis use is medicinal. They use organic growing methods in an indoor grow room.
I was only in Oregon for a few weeks on my van trip, and I didn’t spend too much time familiarizing myself with brands. Instead, like many consumers, I went looking for great deals on known strains.
About the Jack Herer strain
Jack Herer is an incredibly famous cannabis strain named after the man, Jack Herer. Herer was an author and a cannabis advocate in the mid-20th century, most famous for his book The Emperor Wears No Clothes, detailing the history of the cannabis and hemp plants, it’s use, and the real reason for prohibition. This satvia hybrid strain is a cross between Northern Lights (famous in its own right) and Shiva Skunk. Jack Herer is beloved for its terpinolene dominance and uplifting effects, a truly classic sativa strain.
Cannabis in Oregon
In Oregon, great deals abound. Dare I even say – the deals are too great. Prices are so unbelievably low in the Oregon recreational cannabis market, I don’t know how anyone is making any money (and most people aren’t – the market is completely saturated with product.)
I visited Herbal Choices in Bandon, an Oregon dispensary with locations up and down the coast. Here I bought several items, among them a quarter of an ounce of Jack Herer flower for a mere $35. The flower was on special, but getting a cool Q at this price is unheard of.
Jack Herer by F & J Farms Review
This flower was harvested in May 2024 and tested in June. I bought it deli-style in August and watched as the nugs were weighed out and packaged in front of me. Coming from the East Coast where all the weed is wrapped up like a Christmas present from Grandma, it’s refreshing to find deli-style dispensaries that allow you to smell and see the flower before you buy it.
Bud Structure
I must confess that in my rush to taste this strain, I forgot to take note or photo of the bud structure. These were not top colas but neither were they designated smalls. The most I can say is that there was a mix of nug sizes in my bag, each dense and aromatic. Every time I packed a bowl I thought “I need to take a photo of these for the review” and yet I did not. Oops!
Smell and Taste
The first thing I look for in a good nug is the smell. A fresh flower out of the bag was aromatic, leading with gas and pine with earthy floral notes and a hint of citrus at the end. A complex and beautiful smell. The nugs themselves were not very sticky, but were dense and had a good green color.
A dry toke on a joint of this is heavy on the earth and pine, with notes of gas at the end. When I lit it up, it smoked smoothly.
I’m prone to grinding up too much weed at once (and I did.) When left in the grinder, this bud dried out quickly, becoming soft in texture and aroma, the gas and pine lingering longer than the other scents. The smoke of the buds that sat in the grinder was faster and harsher, but that’s on me for keeping my bud there instead of in a sealed container.
Potency
The lab results are for the entire batch, rather than my specific flowers, but this flower tested at 30% THC. While this seems high (and it was potent) take this measurement with a grain of salt – lab results are often skewed to reflect higher THC percentages than most of the flower contains.
Effects
This strain was potent and uplifting. It delivered a heady high as expected, but what surprised me was how easy it was to smoke too much. In smaller doses, it was easy to move through my to-do list and feel focused. In higher quantities, the scatter-brain set it. I was interested in focusing on something, but it had to be creative and free-flowing, not structured like editing client work or banking tasks. I ran out of this strain before I bought a paint-by-number, but I think the two would go quite well together.
For me, this strain was perfect for a small bowl pack in the morning or at the start of my day. I tried it after work as well and found it far too stimulating for 5 pm: it made me anxious to have so much brain activity with nothing to focus on.
Overall, I liked this strain and found this flower to be good quality. It wasn’t top shelf, nor was I expecting it to be for $35. It was a good introduction to an incredibly famous strain, and knowing what I know now, I would buy it again.
