How to Use Cannabis In Your Morning Routine

Cannabis can be a supportive part of your regular morning routine when consumed with intention. If you’re trying to build a morning routine with cannabis that helps you feel your best, here’s what you need to know.

Why Consume Cannabis in the Morning?

Your endocannabinoid tone is meant to be at its highest in the morning, right after waking. If you have endocannabinoid system dysregulation, as many of us do (particularly people with neurodivergence) this may not be true, and supplementing with phyto-cannabinoids from the plant can help your system achieve balance and proper regulation.

Endocannabinoid system dysregulation manifests in many ways, including problems falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up, lack of hunger cues, little to no energy, challenges with emotional regulation, joint pain, lack of focus, and more. If that sounds wide-reaching, it’s because it is: your ECS is a master regulatory system that oversees every biological function you have, and when it’s out of whack, you’re out of whack.

The key to successful cannabis consumption in the morning is twofold: cannabinoid balance and proper dosing. Having a heavy dose of THC can be dysregulating for many people, but some may find it helpful. What tends to work best for the largest group of people is a balance of cannabinoids (THC along with CBD, CBG, or others) in a smaller dosage.

The right dosage of cannabis is intensely personal and will likely take some trial and error to achieve.  However, I would suggest starting with around 0.5 grams, if you’re smoking or vaping flower. If you’re consuming an edible, start with 2.5 mg or 5 mg.

Proper dosage of the right strain or blend of cannabis in the morning can help you feel more awake, focused, positive, and ready to tackle your day – and who doesn’t want to feel that way?

Getting Started with Cannabis in the Morning

Using cannabis in a helpful way means leaving your sesh feeling uplifted and ready to go – not disoriented, dizzy, lethargic, or unfocused. Integrating cannabis into your mornings is personal, based on your needs and your routine. Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • Will you smoke or consume another way, like edibles, tinctures, or softgels?
  • If you smoke, how will you ensure you don’t go through your day smelling like smoke?
  • What is a good dosage for you to feel elevated but functional?
  • What time in the morning works best for you to consume? Narrow it down by:
    • What time you get up
    • What time you have to be out the door, logged into work, or caring for kids
    • How long your consumption method take to kick in (smoking works much faster than edibles)
    • How long after waking you want to wait to consume.

A few ways to enjoy the plant first thing include:

  • Packing a bowl, such as this Weedgets, with a sativa-leaning strain like Jack Herer
  • Rolling a joint with THC flower, CBD flower, and an herbal blend
  • Smoking 0.15 grams of your favorite flower in a one-hitter
  • Portioning out edibles for easy daily enjoyment
  • Including 1 – 2 mL of tincture blended into your coffee, tea, or MUD\WTR
  • Taking a softgel with CBD and CBG along with your daily vitamins
  • Enjoying 1 bag of a desktop dry herb vape

These are just a few examples of the many ways that you can enjoy a small dose of the cannabis plant as you start your day, to help you feel good all day.

You can also incorporate the benefits of cannabis into your skincare routine! This method will not get you high, but will help you glow from the inside out.

My Morning Routine with Cannabis

If you’re nosey like me, having an example of someone else’s morning routine helps me build my own because I can identify what I like and don’t like about it. Here’s how I consume cannabis in the morning in a supportive way.

  • Wake up
  • Read and write morning pages
  • Have a small breakfast
  • Have a cup of coffee on the porch with a bowl or a joint of 0.5 – 0.75 grams of cannabis flower, usually sativa-leaning.
  • Shower, do yoga, meditate, or some combination
  • Open my laptop

I personally prefer to wait until after I’ve eaten breakfast to consume unless I’m dealing with a flare-up of stomach and digestion problems, in which case I’d consume before eating. I always eat before I have my coffee and I enjoy a joint with my coffee in the sun.

Getting outside to consume my cannabis is habit-stacking for me: I get the benefit of boosting my system with cannabinoids and early morning sun, which is essential for proper sleep cycles, digestion, and hormone regulation.

I often enjoy a yoga video and short meditation after my cannabis, which is also habit-stacking. Cannabis helps me feel centered and ready to tackle all of my to-dos, from moving my body to eating well and getting through admin tasks at work.

Does Cannabis Fit into Your Morning Routine?

Consuming cannabis first thing in the morning isn’t right for everyone, but for many people, the proper dosage and strain can deliver an elevating experience that makes you feel energized and enthused to tackle whatever your day has to offer. Finding exactly how cannabis can fit into your morning may take some trial and error as you explore different dosages, strains, and consumption methods. Your endocannabinoid system is as personal as your reasons for consuming cannabis, so be patient, track your results, and stay high!
